THE SOUL OF FREEDOM
Benjamin Beals, 16, Pima
Poetic Form: Ode
The soul doth cry,
“Give me friendship. Give me trust.”
Could it be that we mistakenly voice,
“Give me freedom to follow my lost.”
The hear wants love.
The body wants life without restraint.
It ‘tis when the happy medium is found
That no part has complaint
The natural man has freedom to choose
If others rights doth not abuse
And trust we have in our fellow men
To the extend that we decide, when
Freedom, trust, friendship, lust
Are all cut down to the very crust
All souls may find the truth they need
When we string life through like the bead -
With principle added on, one by one
We learn life is more then just a pun.
The hearts of men may be good or bad
But friendship and freedom may all be had
Each flower may grow when shown the light
For all to see with pure delight
So truth will do to every man
That accepts it from his soul
What light will do to every flower
And make its bloom so full.
Enjoy the freedom you possess
The friendships you make
And gratefulness will fill the heart
With love for every sake.
Freedom is not for evil to act
Or that the devil could control the mind
Freedom was given for the pure
Could seek truth, and find.
God gave us freedom
That good may take place
And fill every heart
Of the human race.
LIBERATION
Julia Christy, 17, Glendale
Poetic Form: Ballad
Covered by shadow
Invisible to sight
A Vision we gather
In the pale light
Reflections of glory
Stories of old
The memories of others
Now stale in the cold
A hope has arisen
The call has been sound
Enemies are driven
The answers are found
New courage has gathered
The fight has been won
Our dreams are not shattered
Deliverence has come
The fog has been lifted
Our eyes can now see
Renewed is our spirit
The people are free
MY FREEDOM
Freeman Dalton, age 7, Phoenix
Poetic Form: Nonet
I am glad to be free in my home
We can go to church and worship
I won’t have to go to jail
Because I obey God
I am thankful for
My Liberty
Family
And my
Lord
BELIEVE IN GOD
Tanner Dalton, 6, Phoenix
Poetic Form: Nonet
Ask for forgiveness for all your sins
God wants to free us from our sins
God died on the cross for us
Free to be good for God
Worship God in church
God is freedom
Free with God
Freedom
Free
MUSIC OF FREEDOM
Taylor Daukas, 7, Peoria
Poetic Form: Rhyme
When I dance, when I sing, Oh how I feel free!
I hear the song of freedom raining down on me.
I hear the music of the street, light posts blinking, now and then.
People walking slowly by my house again
All seems to keep, the rhythm of the beat,
as I dance and as I sing.
Country horses run and move.
To my song with their beating hooves.
Makes me want to dance and sing
In the grass that is green, green, green.
Dancing in the country,
or singing in the city,
I always feel free.
OUR FREEDOM
Michael Davis, 8, Arizona City
Poetic Form: Rhyming
Our first leaders
made a dream come true.
We make our own decisions,
We choose the work to do.
We go to church to worship
and praise God everyday.
To get our special freedom,
there is a price to pay.
We appreciate our veterans
and celebrate their day.
They protect our freedom always
so it doesn’t go away.
WIND SONGS
Abigail Edwards, 10, Tucson
Poetic Form: Free Verse
Listen and you will hear
The rustle of branches
Swaying gently in the breeze.
Look, and see hair blowing
Softly in the wind.
Speak, and let your whispers
Be carried off.
Close your eyes and listen,
And you will hear bells
Sounding in the distance.
And these, my friends
Are songs of the wind.
