FROM TEA TO FREEDOM
Dorian Harris, 12, Scottsdale
Poetic Form: Rhyming
The Boston Tea Party was not a party of glee
It became known as a revolt changing lives for you and me
Although we think simply that it was about tea
It truly was about freedom for generations to be
In tossing the tea
People founded a country of life and liberty
Documents were cast
And to this day those founding words established our past
Creating a future of freedom at last!
SCOTLAND THE FREE
Gabriel Hudelson, 15, Mesa
Poetic Form: Free Verse
Standin’ atop tow’ring hills green and hoary,
Seein’ the land where my fathers hae bled,
A land drenched in blood, steeped in toil, bathed in glory,
Rolling green fields that hae swalled the dead,
Standin’ here alive and true,
Surrounded by the ocean blue,
Bright sword in whitened fist,
And fire in their eye,
The legacy of Freedom, be it hard, be it gory,
Held fast by men who would fain do or die.
Though perhaps today she has spurned patrimony,
Scorning the blood that is deep in her soil,
Covenanters’ blood shoutin’ loud in sweet harmony,
Tellin’ of Christ and a Kirk held by toil,
Though she be in bondage now,
Though her heart be hard and low,
Though her eyes be weak,
Her men’s hands soft, and feet slow,
The blood of the ancients stands in terrible great testimony,
Banner of freedom which no time can soil.
But yet, thought the chains may be forged, lyin’ ready,
Red hot to clasp on the wrists of the free,
There be yet some noble men, some few, proud, and steady,
Who’ll fight, stand, or fall, but their children will be,
Standin’ proud, and holdin’ fast,
To Christ and Kirk and to the last,
Claymore and Covenant,
And Scotland the Free,
Beautiful and terrible and strong, bold and bloody,
Scotland the Brave, the True—Scotland the Free.
MY FREEDOM PRAYER
Trevor Lambson, 8, Mesa
Poetic Form: Sonnet
I go to church every Sunday
To reverently worship in my own way.
I learn about Jesus,
His perfect love for us.
Freedom means I can always pray.
I FEEL FREEDOM
Joshua Martinez, 7, Queen Creek
Poetic Form: Free Verse
I feel freedom.
I feel so free,
Because God is best and loves me.
Do you feel free?
I hope so.
I feel so free that,
I could fly like dragons.
I feel so free that,
I can turn into anything when I grow up.
I LOVE FREEDOM
Kendon Martinez, 9, Queen Creek
Poetic Form: Free Verse
I love freedom,
How about you?
It’s so awesome,
It makes me skip for joy.
To be glad,
To not work so hard.
I like to be free,
Because it’s so cool.
Don’t you think?
I just love it,
Because it’s free.
FREEDOM IS IN GOD’S RIGHT HAND
Killian Martinez, 12, Queen Creek
Poetic Form: Free Verse
There is freedom in this country due to a war,
It was the war of the Confederates and the Union States.
It was the north against the south,
Fighting to have slaves or not.
It was during the time of Abraham Lincoln.
A well fought war,
Both sides winning and loosing.
Although the confederates tried,
The Union States won in the end.
Now I am a Christian and am loving my freedom,
Without God’s mighty right hand,
And those heroes,
We never would have freedom,
For all Americans.
SOMETHING TO DIE FOR
Katherine Messer, 14, Scottsdale
Poetic Form: Rhyming
Flashing through all the ages,
signs of binding slavery rages.
Slavery of soul, body and mind,
brings for Patrick Henry’s line.
Many nations made a try,
freedom and liberty was their cry.
Monroe doctrine, Rutli Oath,
great accomplishments, both.
One great nation led them all,
Lady Liberty raised the call.
The President’s seal is the mark,
hope of independence is the spark.
FREEDOM
Shauna Miller, 8, Phoenix
Poetic Form: Couplet
Freedom is what we wanted. Freedom is what we have.
Freedom is an opportunity. Freedom is what we understand.
Freedom is in America. Freedom is in this land.
Freedom is the law. Freedom is a command.
Some countries far away do not have freedom there.
Children carry rocks about; no shoes can they wear.
I have the freedom to be silly; that is what I like.
And I have the freedom to ride my special bike.
If there were no freedom, my heart would be filled with gloom.
If freedom was not there, I would run into my room.
Freedom is a favorite of mind; God is another.
We have the freedom to hate, but we should love each other.
God gave us freedom in the very beginning.
Jesus died on the bloody cross even while we were sinning.
After Jesus died on the cross, he was laid in a tomb.
But when he rose again, people had joy instead of gloom!
That’s why freedom is so important to me.
Since God gave me freedom, I am very happy!
