THEY WENT TO FIGHT, FOR THE FREEDOM, FOR THE RIGHT
Deborah Moore, 16, Williams
Poetic Form: Free Verse
Fighting in the dust and smoke
Suddenly he stopped, bowed his head an’ spoke.
“God, only you can save us now,” he said.
Into the battle for freedom he then lead,
Men an’ women brave and bold.
This is our mission, to them he told
Staggering, he fell to the ground.
A bullet of death had thus found
It way into his courageous heart.
A new journey he now must start
Running to his commanders side,
His tears of grief he could not hide.
The private gentley bowed his head.
Through prayer he then led,
His commanders soul to the ultimate freedom
“Into Your presence may he come.”
For in vain he did not die.
The private then saluted the sky.
Turning bravely to the war he fought,
For freedom, he knew, must be bought.
And to the lives it did then take,
We all know freedom was the sake.
Commander and private now lay side-by-side
In their beds of death they’ll forever abide.
An’ over them drapes the Red, White and Blue.
In freedoms cause they died for me and you
Raising the guns, firing they did then.
In so, saluting those two men.
And echoing, the words thus came
(Another prayer had been the same)
“God into Your presence may they come,
From this world forth to freedom.”
For in vain they did not die.
The men an’ women saluted the sky.
FREEDOM
by Juliana Powell, 16, Cave Creek
Poetic Form: Tercet
Freedom is the way we breathe
The way we dream
And the way we sleep
Freedom means dancing like nobody’s there
With toes en pointe
And a bun in your hair
Freedom is voting for whomever you choose
Go out and vote
You have nothing to lose
Freedom is practicing your own religion
Like being a Jew
Or a Muslim or Christian
Freedom is going to school every day
No one can stop you
From having your way
Freedom is having the right to speak out
To have speeches
And protest and stand up and shout
Not every country has freedom like ours
So reach for your dreams
And fly to the stars
FREEDOM
Rachel Powell, 10, Cave Creek
Poetic Form: Couplet
Freedom can come in all different kinds.
Sometimes people just have to use their minds.
FREEDOM
Sarah Powell, 13, Cave Creek
Poetic Form: Rhyming
This is freedom to me—
To run with the wind in your hair
To fill up your lungs with fresh air
To dance with the clouds in the sky
To rest while the world rushes by
To sing with the sun’s golden lyre
To fly with the moon ever higher
To whisper to angels above
To laugh with the ones that I love—
This is freedom to me.
LET FREEDOM RING
Bailey Rozendaal, 9, Prescott Valley
Poetic Form: Free Verse
Freedom, everyone is equal
Black, white, brown are the same.
Women at the poll,
Just as the men.
Education for everyone,
Even when the wallet is empty.
Military on duty
No need to be scared.
Amen to the Declaration of Independence
Founding Fathers, way to go.
America is Beautiful
Let Freedom Ring.
FREEDOM, SO REAL, SO NICE
Garrett Rozendaal, 14, Prescott Valley
Poetic Form: Free Verse
Listen fortunate citizens, and you will gloat
That here in American we have the freedom to vote.
The freedom to fight
To know what is right,
And to know that your family is safe at night.
America, so free, so nice.
If you speak out, you don’t pay a price.
When you’ve wronged, its okay
You’ll get a fair trial anyway.
Education all can grasp
No matter if you’re white, red or black.
Religion is a big one
No need to change what you’ve always done.
Here in American you can bear arms
And free to protect your family from harm.
Freedom, so real, so nice.
