2006 - HIGHLIGHTS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Jesse Gunsch, 1st Place in American Mathematics Competition

August, 2006

Jesse Gunsch, a student of Gunsch Home School in Sierra Vista, took first place in Arizona on the 10th grade American Mathematics Competition test.
Every year, more than 200,000 students take the 10th and 12th grade tests and only the top 10 percent are allowed to move on to the higher levels of competitions offered by the Mathematical Association of America. Top performers then go on to the Math Olympiad and the opportunity to represent the United States at the International Math Olympics.

Jesse Gunsch also tied for third in the state on the 12th grade test. Because of his scores, he advanced to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination for the second year in a row. Two years ago, Jesse placed second in the state’s MathCounts competition for junior high school students and attended the national MathCounts Competition in Washington, DC.

A high school junior, Jesse enjoys volleyball and yearbook staff as part of Christian Home Educators of Cochise County; and enjoys playing drums for Cochise College and First Baptist Church of Sierra Vista. He hopes to qualify for the Math Olympiad before high school graduation and then attend the University of Arizona to major in engineering. His parents are Trace and Deb Gunsch of Sierra Vista.
