Children and Teens

Can I bring my children to the convention?

Can I bring my children to the Convention?

Children may attend the Convention with their parents. There is a $10 admission fee for each child age 3 and older. We do not have a children’s program at our Convention due to space limitations and liability issues. Children under 12 must remain with an adult at all times.

Children are welcome in any of the adult workshop sessions provided there is space available, they are not disruptive, and they are accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Preference for seating should be for adults first.

There is no charge for infants and we do provide a curtained area for moms in the exhibit hall for nursing and feeding infants.

Are strollers permitted? Wheeled carts?

Are strollers permitted? What about wheeled carts?

Due to space limitations and hazards due to blocked aisles, strollers will only be allowed in workshop rooms in open spots in the back row. Once the open spots for stroller parking are filled, strollers must be parked in the hallway or in the Stroller Parking/Book Check booth in the exhibit hall.

Strollers are permitted in the ballroom and in the exhibit hall provided you do not block the aisle or someone else’s access to an exhibitor booth.

STROLLER PARKING & BOOK CHECK BOOTH: We are pleased to announce that we will provide a book check booth inside the exhibit hall to the right. You’ll be able to leave your purchases and strollers for a small fee with our book check team. Claim numbers will be issued to allow you to pick up your items or add to your pile. (In and out privileges, one fee per day per stroller, per wheeled cart, per box, etc.). AFHE will have boxes in the book check booth where you can store your purchases.

FEE: $3 per stroller or wheeled cart per day with in-and-out privileges.  $3 per box for the day to store your purchases.

Why is there a charge for children/teens to attend?

Why is there a charge for children/teens to attend?

We charge for children because we are not equipped to handle a very large number of children at the Convention Center. The AFHE Convention is geared toward parent/teacher enrichment and education. We understand, however, that some cannot arrange childcare or wish to have their children attend with them and we want to give you the option to bring your children if necessary/desired.

What is there for teens to do?

What is there for teens to do?

We are pleased to offer a two-day Teen Program at the Convention for homeschooled students age 12-18. Details can be found on the TEEN PROGRAM page. The fee for teens participating in the Teen Program is $20 per student, includes Convention admission, and is limited to the first 350 teens to register. Regular teen admission to the convention (for those not participating in the Teen Program) is $10 per student. Teens are also invited to attend and enjoy any of the other workshop sessions and the exhibit hall. We ask that they conduct themselves as well-mannered young men and women at all times, not disruptive to others at the convention.

Why isn’t there a children’s program?

Why isn’t there a children’s program?

We were pleased to be able to offer a children’s program in 2018 as part of AFHE’s 35th Anniversary celebration. The children’s program is not an annual/recurring event, however.

There are two primary factors that prohibit us from offering a children’s program at the AFHE Convention. First, our event is held in a building in downtown Phoenix that is open to the public. For safety and liability issues, we do not wish to take responsibility for other people’s children nor do we have the staff or volunteers needed to make that possible. Second, we simply do not have the space. The option to offer a children’s program off-site would not be ideal and the expense involved would make such a program cost-prohibitive.

The only way we could make the children’s program work in 2018 was to use the same room for the children’s program in the morning and the teen program in the afternoon, giving half-day programming to each set of age groups, and to use a local theater arts company’s fingerprinted, background checked team members. While most really enjoyed the fun musical theater program offered last year, we received a number of complaints from parents of younger children and also teens who were unhappy with the half-day programming.

As a reminder, the AFHE Convention is geared toward parent educator equipping and edification. You are welcome to bring your children with you to the Convention and we love seeing families enjoy the weekend together. Many parents choose to arrange for childcare so they are able to come and glean as much as possible … treating it as a professional development or continuing education opportunity for themselves. Whatever approach you take, we are blessed to have you join us!

How do I register my homeschool graduate?

How do I register my homeschool gradaute?

Unmarried homeschool graduates who are still living at home or attending college are permitted to register for the convention with their parents for $10 each. AFHE provides a Continuing Education form for those attendees who are required to obtain continuing education hours (i.e. foster parents). Please ask for a form at the registration counter in the lobby and an AFHE representative will sign it for you. You will fill in the workshops you attended along with the presenters’ names. You will need to check with your licensing agency to find out which workshops qualify for continuing education hours.

Distribution or Collection of Materials, Polls, Petitions

Can I hand out my business cards or fliers?

Can I hand out my business cards or fliers?

No. The distribution of materials at the convention is prohibited. There are three sanctioned opportunities for sharing information with convention attendees about businesses, organizations, clubs, products, services, etc. which must meet certain criteria and be approved. These three approved avenues are renting booth space, participating in the welcome bags, or purchasing ad space in the convention program. There is an application/contract process and fees associated with each of these three options.

To honor and be fair to those who have paid for these opportunities, we do not allow anyone to hand out fliers, brochures, business cards, or other materials at the AFHE Convention.

Any fliers, brochures, cards, catalogs, etc. found on tables, in public areas outside booth space, in restrooms, etc. will be picked up and discarded.

Grandparents (non-homeschooling)

What is the admission price for grandparents?

We understand the importance of grandparents in the homeschool process. Non-homeschooling* grandparents are always free if they come with their adult child who is registered for the convention.

*Non-homeschooling grandparent means that the grandparent isn’t still homeschooling their own child. Grandparents are certainly encouraged to be involved in the homeschooling process with their grandchildren at their adult child’s invitation and direction.

Grandparents who are still homeschooling one or more children of their own must register separately and pay the full admission fee.

How do I add a grandparent to my registration?

How do add a grandparent to my registration?

There is a spot in the registration form to add grandparents and register them at no charge.

Grandparent name badges will be included in the primary adult registrant’s name badge envelope.

If you pre-registered for the convention, but didn’t register your parent (a non-homeschooling grandparent), you can add them at on-site registration. You will pick up your name badge at the pre-registration line and go to the on-site registration line to register your parent and get a name badge for them (no charge).

There is no charge for non-homeschooling grandparents who register at the door, but they must attend the convention with their adult child/ren who are registered for the convention (either through early registration or on-site registration).
