The AFHE Board of Directors highly values the role of the local homeschool group as a place where families can connect, build relationships, and encourage one another in the homeschool journey. We appreciate and esteem the men and women who lead homeschool support groups across Arizona.

AFHE hosts an annual Leadership Conference for Arizona homeschool support group leaders with the purpose of bringing these leaders together to share ideas, receive encouragement, and get updates about issues related to homeschooling in Arizona. Our desire is to equip, refresh, inspire, and show appreciation for the dedicated leaders who volunteer their time serving and supporting homeschooling families in their local area throughout the year.

We invite leaders from homeschool groups listed on the AFHE website as well as leaders of groups that are eligible to be listed on the website (groups that exist specifically to serve families who are homeschooling in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes). Your group should be predominantly composed of homeschooling families and your leadership team made up primarily of homeschooling parents. If you have questions, please feel free to email us at

We appreciate the faithful service of homeschool group leaders to support Arizona’s homeschool community.

Executive Director, IAHE

Tara Bentley is a veteran homeschool mom of two daughters. During 13 years of homeschooling, she and her husband Mark served in leadership for 12. They currently serve together on the Board of Directors for Indiana Association of Home Educators (IAHE), where Tara also serves as the Executive Director. Always juggling work, family, and multiple responsibilities, Tara loves encouraging moms who often feel like they just aren’t enough.

Tara will be teaching two fun, engaging workshops on healthy leadership skills.

Tara’s Workshops

Homeschooling your own kids and serving in support group leadership can be a recipe for unhealthy habits—neglecting your own well-being, putting the needs of the group over your husband and kids’ needs, or struggling to keep your own house in order. We’ll explore ways to tackle all of this successfully through healthy leadership habits. You can shed the weight of unhealthy habits that bog you down and thrive while serving others.

Today’s world tells us that we can have it all. Is that even true? Are you stuck in the gap between your calling to homeschool and your capacity to get it all done? Being overloaded and overwhelmed doesn’t have to be the price we pay for the choice to homeschool. Margin is the space between ourselves and our limits. Tara shares about her own struggles with maintaining a healthy margin in life and provides practical tips for how to be more intentional in our lives.

Zan Tyler’s homeschool journey began in 1984 when homeschooling was illegal. The state superintendent of education threatened Zan with jail for insisting on homeschooling her son. For the next eight years, she and her family battled for homeschool freedom and the establishment of landmark homeschool legislation in South Carolina.

As a popular author and speaker, Zan’s passion is to encourage parents to raise children who love the Lord, understand their callings in life, and become active citizens who understand the the principles of freedom that undergird our American heritage. She currently represents BJU Press Homeschool/HomeWorks by Precept.

For sixteen years, Zan worked with Christian publishers to develop homeschool curriculum and resources. She considers the twenty-one-years she and her husband, Joe, spent homeschooling their own three children from kindergarten through high school to be one of the greatest privileges of her life. Zan has been married to Joe since 1977 and together they have three children and six grandchildren.

Zan’s Top Ten List for Leaders

As a homeschooling parent, your plate is already full. Sometimes, homeschool leadership can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. But it doesn’t have to be that way! In this session, Zan Tyler identifies three questions every leader should be able to answer and ten principles every homeschool leader should know. These questions and principles are designed to make your life as a leader more manageable, effective, and even enjoyable!

We are grateful for the sponsors that partner with us to provide a quality event, while helping to keep costs as low as possible for leaders to attend this special day dedicated to you!
