We are pleased to bring back the Young Entrepreneurs program again this year! This is a great way to celebrate and encourage the entrepreneurship of the many talented homeschooled students in our state. We invite Arizona homeschool students and graduates age 11-24 who have their own business, product, or service to apply for booth space in the Young Entrepreneurs section at this year’s AFHE Convention.

The Young Entrepreneurs section is located along the wall on the right-hand side of the Exhibit Hall. Be sure to stop by and check out the quality products and services offered by these industrious students and graduates.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?

Students who are currently being taught at home by their parents in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes §15-802* are invited to participate in the AFHE Young Entrepreneurs program. Students must be a minimum age of 11 by July 18, 2019. Homeschool graduates who are age 24 or younger are also invited to participate.

*ARS §15-802 defines a homeschool as “a nonpublic school conducted primarily by the parent, guardian, or other person who has custody of the child or nonpublic instruction provided in the child’s home.” Students enrolled in a public school, private school, charter school, or virtual charter school are ineligible to participate as Young Entrepreneurs at the AFHE Convention.

Although ESA contract students taught at home are a different student classification of student in Arizona state law and are not classified as homeschoolers, AFHE will permit an ESA (Empowerment Scholarship Account) Contract Student who is being taught at home to participate as long as they identify themselves as an ESA contract student in the application and if space is available.

Young Entrepreneur businesses must be owned, managed, and operated by homeschool students or graduates only. Businesses owned and operated or directed by parents or others with assistance from students are not eligible. In addition, multi-level marketing, distributorship, franchise-model businesses, or businesses where students are reselling someone else’s products are not permitted.

There are a limited number of Young Entrepreneur booths available and each entrepreneur is limited to one full booth or one half booth. Until you receive confirmation of approval and submit your payment, your booth is not guaranteed.

If space is still available, additional applications will be accepted after May 3, but may not be listed in the convention program due to the publishing/printing schedule.

Participation is by invitation and space is limited. AFHE reserves the right to decline a Young Entrepreneur application without further comment.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY?

The application deadline to be included in the convention program is May 3, 2019.

If space is still available after the May 3 deadline, we will accept additional applications, but late applicants may not be able to be included in the convention program.

WHEN IS MY PAYMENT DUE?

Payment deadline is May 9, 2018 to be included in the convention program.

If space is still available after the May 9 payment deadline, we will accept additional applications, but late applicants will not be able to be included in the convention program.

We accept payment by check or credit card. Once an application is reviewed and approved, the Young Entrepreneur will receive an invoice with payment instructions.

CAN MY SIBLING OR A FRIEND HELP AT MY BOOTH?

Yes! You can have your brother or sister or a friend help at your booth. Your Y.E. application includes one Y.E. badge for you to wear. You will have the opportunity to add up to two extra Y.E. badges to your Young Entrepreneur application for $10 each. These are only to be used by homeschooled youth and graduates. You can also have siblings or friends who are already registered for the convention assist you at your booth without having to order additional badges. They can wear their convention name badge and help in your booth, but they must be registered for the Convention and have a badge.

All individuals must be registered for the convention or have a paid-for exhibitor or young entrepreneur badge to be in the exhibit hall.

Adults must register through normal AFHE Convention registration procedures. Young Entrepreneur registration does not include admission to the Convention for parents or family members of Young Entrepreneurs.

DO MY PARENTS HAVE TO REGISTER FOR THE CONVENTION?

All individuals must be registered for the convention or have a paid-for exhibitor badge or Young Entrepreneur badge* to attend the convention and enter the exhibit hall.

Your parents are welcome to assist at your booth as well, but they need to register for the convention through the regular registration form. Free admission to the convention is not included for parents or siblings of Young Entrepreneurs. A parent or other designated adult must be registered for the AFHE Convention and be on-site throughout the weekend for Young Entrepreneurs that are under age 18. AFHE does not assume responsibility for the well-being and safety of children or teens at this event.

*Young Entrepreneur badges are only available for youth and graduates working as booth representatives for a registered Young Entrepreneur.

WHEN CAN I SET UP MY BOOTH?

Young Entrepreneur booth set up will be Thursday, July 18 between 3:00 and 6:00 pm or Friday, July 20 between 7:30 and 9:00 AM.

Load-in instructions will be provided a couple of weeks before the AFHE Convention.

We encourage Young Entrepreneurs to park in a nearby downtown Phoenix parking garage and carry your items in. You can pull up to the short-term loading area in front of the Phoenix Convention Center South Building on 3rd Street, unload your items, and go park. Then check in and set up your booth. Vehicles can only be in the loading area for a few minutes.

If you have a large quantity of items to bring in, you will be given instructions for going through the staging area in the East Garage and driving up onto the dock. With the number of exhibitors we have using the dock, it is best for Young Entrepreneurs to use this option only if absolutely necessary.

Exhibitor load-in begins at noon, but Young Entrepreneurs will not be admitted for booth set-up until 3:00 PM. Larger full-paying exhibitors need to get checked in and unload first as their booths can take up to six hours to set up. Our exhibit hall team wants to be able to greet Young Entrepreneurs and get you checked in later in the afternoon once the big rush with the larger vendors has slowed a bit.

CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE TEEN PROGRAM AND BE A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR?

Young Entrepreneurs are strongly encouraged to focus on participating as an exhibitor and forgo participation in the Teen Program this year. Your booth must be staffed from 10:00 am – 6:30 pm Friday and 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Saturday.

If you have a parent or friend who will staff your booth for you so you can enjoy a portion of the Teen Program, contact registration@afhe.org for instructions on how to register as there is an additional fee for the Teen Program.

WHAT IF I HAVE TO LEAVE EARLY?

When you sign up as a Young Entrepreneur, you are making a commitment and agreeing to follow the guidelines for participation. Early departure is not permitted. Your booth must be staffed from 10:00 am – 6:30 pm Friday and 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Saturday. Empty/abandoned booths create a void that can have a negative impact on your neighboring exhibitors. Please consider the time commitment carefully before applying and make sure you are able to fully commit and follow through.
